Is it continuing the
‘Spirit of ANZAC’?

In 1999 East Timor voted overwhelmingly to regain independence from Indonesia. The vote unleashed mass burning, looting, beatings and even murder by pro-Indonesian locals (‘militias’) and by Indonesian troops.

The world watched in horror at the violence, and finally Australian and other nations’ troops were sent to East Timor as part of a United Nations operation.

Their task was to provide protection and security to the local people, so that they could begin rebuilding their lives and their new nation.

This activity allows pupils to examine the East Timor situation. It is supported by seven paper-based investigations, each provided as a single-page Adobe Acrobat™ file.
