During the day Gordon’s battalion was
precariously wedged between the banks of the Somme and Fargny Wood.
Gordon single-handedly attacked a German machine-gun post that was
persistently enfilading the Australian position, killing the gunner
and capturing the post, which consisted of one officer and ten men.
He then entered Fargny Wood and cleared a trench, capturing
twenty-nine prisoners and two machine guns. He took over further
trenches, capturing twenty-two prisoners and three machine guns. |
