During an action a bombing position with two machine guns held up an advance. A bomb fight ensued in which the enemy ‘egg’ bombs outranged those of the Australians. Leak jumped out of his trench, ran forward under heavy machine-gun fire, and threw three bombs into the enemy post and bayoneted three unwounded bombers. Later, when the enemy drove the party back, Leak was the last to withdraw at each stage, and he kept bombing. When reinforcements arrived the whole trench was recaptured.
